It’s Faculty Friday! Meet Mr. Taelor Rye! This is Mr. Rye's fourth year at Wilkinson County High School. Mr. Rye is an English Teacher and teaches American Lit and AP Language and Composition. He also serves as the Varsity Tennis Coach. Mr. Rye was voted as WCHS Teacher of the Year AND District Teacher of the Year for the 2018-2019 school year. Mr. Rye was inspired to become a teacher because he wants our future to be well equipped for the challenges that will come their way. If you see Mr. Rye around campus, be sure to say HELLO! 

How long have you been teachingThis is my fourth year teaching, and all have been at WCHS.

What inspired you to be a teacher? I became a teacher because I want our state, nation, and world's future to be well equipped for the challenges that will come their way. I also think that high school is such a critical time for children in terms of developing their own beliefs, identities, and goals. It's important for high schoolers, and all students, to have non-judgmental guidance on their path to self-discovery. I had some voices help me along my way, but I would have appreciated more, so I'd like to be that person for my students - a defender, an instructor, a helper, and a supporter.

What three traits define you? I believe myself to be insightful, hilarious, and sociable.

What would you most like to tell your teenage self? There are a lot of voices telling you what to think without truly telling you why to think it; instead, focus on developing HOW to think -- for yourself, most importantly. Think deeply, critically, and compassionately. 

What do you hope your students remember most about you as a teacher? I hope that students remember my relatability, my sense of humor, my dedication, and my passion for social justice.

Our school theme this year is "Anchored In Excellence", how do you work to bring that to life in your classes? Given the needs of our students, I work to provide real-life application to the assignments that we do. For example, when I have my students write an essay, I work to convey to them that they may never need to write another essay once they finish school (at whatever level they choose), but they will always need to know how to communicate. They may not have to write an argumentative research paper after they graduate high school, but they'll always need to know how to prove a point to someone else. Additionally, I work to anchor my instruction in excellence by teaching empathy. Storytelling through any medium - print, film, television, etc. - is more than just the story itself; it's the people involved, the reasons and motivations for their behavior, and the impact of their choices. Stories reflect authenticity, even in science fiction and fantasy, so it's an important life skill to be able to put oneself in someone else's shoes before casting judgment. Through my classroom, I try to guide my students to this realization.

What do you work toward in your free time? In my free time, I work toward building and maintaining strong personal bonds with other people. I love and enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I also spend time diving into others' stories -- including TV shows, articles, short stories, music, novels, and movies. Most importantly, I work toward seeing a future that is more accessible and fair to all, regardless of differences in social class, gender, race, sexual orientation, ability, and other aspects.

Women are the future.
